Singaporean Sweet & Sour Chicken

This is a very popular side dish, apart from the chicken curry that is had all year around along with rice. It also goes well with any fried rice. It is the most favoured dish in all hawker centres across the country.

It is generally crispy fried chicken strips cooked with bell peppers in a sweet and sour sauce. Very easy and simple to make, it hardly takes any time to dish out this delicacy when time is a constraint. So check out the step by step pictorial recipe to prepare it.

  • 500 gms, chicken breast, cut into strips
  • 2 cups, assorted Bell Peppers, diced
  • 2-3 tbsp. oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 cup spring onions (white portions only)
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. pepper powder or to taste
  • 2- tbsp. red chili sauce
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. spring onions (green portions), chopped

Marination -

  • 1 egg
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. cornflour
  • 1/2 tsp. red chili flakes

Marinate the chicken with egg, salt, pepper, cornflour and chili flakes for 2-3 hours. Heat 2 tbsp. oil in a pan and saute the chicken till light brown. Drain and keep aside.

Heat remaining oil and saute the garlic for a few seconds till they change colour. Now add the onion and saute for a minute.

Then add the diced bell peppers and the spring onions. Fry on high heat for a further minute.

Add the salt, pepper, chili sauce and sugar. Give it a stir to combine well. Then add the fried chicken and mix well. Saute for a few seconds, before serving, garnished with spring onions.
