Gawar Chi Bhaji (Cluster Beans Curry - Maharashtrian Style)

     
          This is a traditional Maharashtrian style cluster beans curry. It is very common in many Maharashtrian household and goes well with any Indian bread. The unique flavour of this dish comes from the use of goda masala, a typical Maharashtrian spice mix that is generally used in many dishes. 

          This side dish can be cooked with or without onion as per individual preference. It is a simple, no-fuss, purely vegetarian dish with a very mild and nutty flavour coming from the peanuts. So check out the step by step pictorial recipe to prepare it. 








  • 300 gms. Gawar (cluster beans), chopped into 1" piece
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp. asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp. red chili powder
  • 1-2 tbsp. roasted peanut powder
  • 1-2 tbsp. fresh coconut, grated
  • 1 tsp. goda / garam masala
  • salt to taste
  • 1-2 green chilies, slit (opt)
  • 1 tsp. lime juice
  • 1 tbsp. coriander leaves, chopped








          Pressure cook the beans in a steel container without any water for 2-3 whistles. (only the bottom of the cooker should contain water). Keep aside.

          Heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida. Add the beans, turmeric powder, red chili powder, goda masala, peanut powder, coconut and salt.

          Sauté till all the masalas are well mixed for a couple of minutes on a low flame. Add slit green chilies and coriander leaves. 

          When done, add lime juice and give it a stir. Switch off the flame and serve hot with chapattis or as a side dish with rice and dal (lentil).






Note - 
You may add a bit of jaggery or sugar for some sweetness. 




                       Heat oil & temper with mustard seeds, cumin seeds & asafoetida. 



                      Add beans, turmeric powder, red chili powder, goda masala, peanut 
                      powder, coconut & salt. Sauté for a couple of minutes on low flame till 
                      all the masalas are well mixed.
                 


                      Add green chilies & coriander leaves. When done, add lime juice & stir. 






                            Serve hot with chapattis or as a side dish with rice and dal (lentil).
